Baby Massage for Colic

Baby massage can have many benefits including helping to ease colic. All babies cry but if your baby is crying a lot, more often in the afternoon and evening, there is no obvious cause and they are often inconsolable they may be suffering from colic. This can be a destressing time for you seeing your baby so upset. You may be feeling helpless that you are unable to comfort them, and no doubt exhausted through lack of sleep. Some signs of colic include - Hard to soothe or settle, clenching fists, red face, bringing their knees towards their tummy and can be very windy. Colic tends to start when babies are a few weeks old and usually stops between 3-6 months. The cause of colic is not exactly known. Some professionals believe its due to the baby's immature digestive system being unable to process feeds which leads to trapped wind. Others state it is related to food allergies. Massage could help ease colic as it stimulates the babys nervous system which in turn improves how the digestive system and brain work together making it more affective at processing feeds and reducing the build up of wind and therefore discomfort. Our tummy is like a mirror to our emotions. If we are feeling stressed or upset the muscles tighten which can cause discomfort and restricts the flow through our digestive system. Massage can help relax these muscles. Massage also helps to physically move air out of babys body reliving discomfort. While your baby is suffering from colic, we recommend practicing specific massage strokes twice a day. This are generally focused on the tummy and reflexology points on the feet.
